Chris Who?

Hi
I’m a Freelance Journalist with extensive scientific qualifications and over twenty years experience writing on health, medicine, science, the environment and travel. If I can write a piece that combines all these interests then so much the better!
Education and Work
I graduated from Aston University in 1975 with a degree in Environmental Biology, Physiology and Pharmacology and taught for a while before joining the NHS as a Medical Scientist. I’m a Fellow of the Institute of Biomedical Science specialising in Haematology, have a Masters in Immunology and somewhere along the line also qualified as a psychotherapist. I left the NHS in 2005 to concentrate on writing.
Writing
I’ve combined journalism with a career in science ever since I worked on the award winning Aston Sun (Student Union News). In order of my subjective assessment of prestige I’ve written for: New Scientist, The Guardian, The Independent, The Observer, Environment Magazine, General Practitioner, Doctor, Hospital Doctor, Nursing Times, Nursing Standard, Self-Build & Design, Biomedical Scientist, Medical Laboratory World, Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, Image Magazine, Healthcare Equipment and Supplies, Hospital Development, Laboratory News and many others.
You can find a selection of my articles from the home page and links to other sites where you’ll find many more. They include specialised articles, features for non-experts, interviews, book reviews, conference reports, product assessments and the odd travel piece.
Travel
Talking of travel, which I love to, I’ve visited over thirty countries on five continents. Using buses, trains, boats and a lot of shoe leather I’ve hauled various combinations of my three children around India, Africa, Central America and a good part of Europe. I hope their current preference for a quick flight to a fancy hotel is purely temporary!
Who I am not!
Don’t confuse me with the Chris Bird who wrote ‘The Secret Life of Plants’, though I have written dozens of articles about the medicinal uses of plants. Nor am I the Chris Bird who wrote about the war in the former Yugoslavia - but I have reported from Kosovo.
